Lake Tahoe, California
Lake Tahoe is absolutely one of my favorite places to go in California- the clear blue water takes me by surprise every single time and there’s just always something new to see every time I go! And with its stunning alpine scenery and endless outdoor adventures, it’s no wonder why Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular destinations for tourists and locals alike.
Personally, my favorite time to go is in the Fall when there are fewer crowds, some leaves are starting to turn, and the water is still about tolerable to wade in. But there are so many things you can do in Lake Tahoe year-round, and in this post I’ll talk about what things you shouldn’t miss (especially for first timers), when’s the best time to come for them, tips on how to save to help you decide what’s the best time to go to Lake Tahoe for you. Let’s go!
about lake tahoe, ca
Before I get into the pros and cons of each season, let’s talk about Lake Tahoe – where it is and what makes it so special!
Located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Tahoe is California’s second-deepest lake and one of the largest alpine lakes in North America. Its crystal-clear waters are pristine, surrounded by majestic mountains, forests, and meadows. Lake Tahoe also experiences all four seasons, with warm summer days by the lake and cold winter days skiing the slopes.
The most populated areas of Lake Tahoe are South Lake Tahoe on the California side and Incline Village on the Nevada side with a population of about 21,309 people. Can you believe people actually live here? I would absolutely love waking up to this view!

where is lake tahoe and how do you get there?
As always, I’d hate to bore you with too many details so if you already know how you’ll get here and around – feel free to skip right on to the next section.
To get to Lake Tahoe you can either drive or take a flight if you’re coming from farther away.
Drive
From Los Angeles, it’s a 5-6 hour drive, depending on traffic. It is a scenic route through the Sierra Nevada Mountains and many drivers take Highway 50 all the way to South Lake Tahoe, with plenty of camping and stopping points along the way. Mono Lake is a great stop along this drive! If you’re driving from Los Angeles, you might need more than a weekend to make the most out of your travel. This is the route we always take and always plan for at least 3 full days in Lake Tahoe.
From San Francisco, Lake Tahoe is much closer – only a 3-4 hour drive depending on traffic making it an easy weekend getaway.
On my last trip to Lake Tahoe, I was taking friends through some of my favorite spots in California where we drove from San Francisco, through Napa, and Lake Tahoe. If you’re planning a bigger trip around Lake Tahoe, you might also be interested in my post: How to Plan the Perfect Napa Itinerary.
Flying
The closest airport to Lake Tahoe is the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). From there, you can either rent a car and drive to Lake Tahoe or take a shuttle service. I always use Skyscanner to snag the best deals for flights and Expedia for rental cars.

When to Go & When to Avoid?
The best time to go to Lake Tahoe will depend on a number of things but mainly on what you’re interested to do and the type of weather you prefer. In this section I break down which seasons are most crowded and most expensive and which seasons are more affordable and quiet. In the next section I talk about how to choose a season based on the activities you’re interested in.
Weather
Lake Tahoe experiences all four seasons but the area gets an average of 300 sunny days in a year.
✦ In Winter (December through February), expected temperatures range from 20-40°F (-4° to 7°C), and snow can be expected for skiing and snowboarding activities.
✦ In Spring (March-May) is milder, with average temperatures ranging from 40-70°F (7° to 21°C).
Hate large crowds?
Summer (June-August) is the most popular time to visit, with temperatures ranging from 70-90°F (21°C-32°C). Water activities are perfect for the warm weather and it’s a great time to go hiking, biking, swimming and boating. If this is the time you prefer to go, try to travel during the week instead of on weekends to avoid the biggest lines and prices during this high season.
What to save a few bucks?
Autumn (September-November) is one of the cheapest times to visit Lake Tahoe. Temperatures range from 40s-70s°F (4°C-21°C). This is a great time for outdoor activities such as hiking and biking, as well as sightseeing in the area’s stunning alpine scenery! The changing colors of the leaves make for stunning views and it’s a great time to explore the trails and enjoy the crisp air. Prices are also lower than in the summer months.
Least Busy Time to Visit Lake Tahoe?
The least busy time to visit Lake Tahoe is during the winter months (December-February) which is also ski season. There are less tourists during this time of the year but you can expect the slopes and snow lodges to be booked.
“Worst” Time to Visit Lake Tahoe?
Of course this is totally subjective, but the most crowded and most expensive month to go to Lake Tahoe is during the summer months (June-August). During this time, it can be difficult to find moderately priced accommodations, activities, and parking lots fill up fast. Additionally, the higher temperatures in summer of course make it perfect for swimming, but also make some outdoor activities such as hiking, uncomfortable.
Overall Best Time to Go To Lake Tahoe?
Overall, the best time to visit Lake Tahoe is in Spring or Fall. Prices are lower than during peak season and crowds aren’t as large. You’ll get to experience the beauty of Lake Tahoe without the added expense or stress of summertime tourist season plus enjoy more pleasant weather. Visiting during the shoulder seasons still means you can get out on the water and take a dip on especially warmer days.

Best Time to Go Based on Activity
No matter when you visit, be sure to check the forecast and plan for windy, wet, and cold weather conditions. If you’re interested in very specific activities, below are some popular things to do in Lake Tahoe.
Camping in Lake Tahoe
If camping is what you’re interested in, come in the months of May-October when the days are warmer and you won’t need to worry about winter conditions. Campsites near the lake are especially popular as they offer stunning views and easy access to a variety of activities.
Hiking and Biking in Lake Tahoe
Hikers and bikers should come to the lake during warmer months (May-October). Spring is an especially great time to visit, as the wildflowers will be in bloom.
Swimming in Lake Tahoe
Swimming is a popular activity in the summer months, but it’s not recommended during other times of year due to the cold water temperatures. Even in the summer the water temperature can be fairly cold for most people, at a max of 60~68°F (17° to 20°C).
Snow Sports
Snowy months in Lake Tahoe are the perfect time to ski and snowboard. In fact, some of the best snow can be found in late spring (April-May). First snowfall is expected as early as September and continues through April. Roads are usually plowed but be prepared with snow tires / chains during the winter season.
Lake Tahoe Monthly Events
A few important events that take place in Lake Tahoe are the Lake Tahoe Marathon in October, the Summer Concert Series throughout June, July, and August, and the Big Blue Music & Brews Festival in October. Fourth of July is also a popular time for visitors to come and enjoy the fireworks over the lake. Take note of these dates if you’re interested in attending them, or maybe avoid them if you don’t want crowds.
Favorite Things to Do in Lake Tahoe
Swim in the Lake
Enjoy the crystal clear water of Lake Tahoe from the water! There are plenty of swim spots around the shore, but here are my favorites:
Sand Harbor
✦ Shallow shore that gradually gets deeper (great for kids)
✦ Has boulders to sit on or jump off from
✦ Paid parking
✦ Location
Secret Cove
✦ Unofficial nude beach of Lake Tahoe
✦ Hike 1 mile through the woods to get to this spot
✦ Alot of great spots along the beach or on the boulders
✦ Location
Get on a Boat
Getting on a boat is a great way to explore the waters farther from the shore. Consider this 2-hour sailing cruise on your trip!
Paddleboard / Kayak
Kayaks are available in Sand Harbor beach and other Lake Tahoe beaches. It’s a great way to explore the shoreline or paddle out to nearby coves! A crystal kayak tour is also a great way to enjoy the clear water.
Biking
Lake Tahoe has an extensive network of trails for hiking, biking, or running. You can explore the lake’s many peaks and valleys, or take in the views from high up on a mountain. My favorite biking trail is the Tahoe East Shore Trail which is a scenic trail along the water. There are so many vista points and hidden coves along this trail which make great stopping points. Book your Self-Guided E-Bike Tour here.
Hiking
Combine a sunset view with an epic hike. Cave Rock Trail is one of the most rewarding views in Lake Tahoe with just a 0.9 mile out and back trail which takes less than 30 minutes to reach.
Enjoy the View
Popular vista points are Cave Rock and Emerald Bay. These points provide breathtaking views of the lake and are especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset! I never pass up on a sunrise view of Emerald Bay whenever I’m in Lake Tahoe.
Best Places to Stay in Lake Tahoe
Regardless of when you visit, there are tons of great places to stay in Lake Tahoe. From resorts and cabins to camping spots and RV parks, there is something for everyone.
If you want to be close to amenities of a small town, stay in South Lake Tahoe. If you’re looking for a more peaceful setting, try one of the many small towns around Emerald Bay or Truckee. Cheaper accomodations can be found further away from town centers, while more luxurious getaways are closer to the action.
Coachman Hotel is our favorite place to stay in Lake Tahoe. The rooms are beautifully designed and we love having s’mores along their central courtyard. Book your stay here!
